BUSTED.
If you had asked me that one year ago....I would say, confirmed....however things have changed. My son has changed. He loves people now, he has friends....he wanted a party. I know I mentioned this before, but I am still reeling from the shock of it all....HE wanted a party.
Not just a party, he wanted to pay tribute to his favorite show...Mythbusters.
So we created some fun science experiments and had a great time. The wind was a little crazy so our Egg in a Bottle myth didn't go quite as planned but none of the kids seemed to mind.
Shooting "Buster" up to the sky on a model rocket engine was the highlight of the day. Poor Ken. He took quite a beating.....but brought much delight to the kids who saw him reach for the heavens.
The cake will go down in history.....better than you would think, it was cornbread with cream cheese frosting, sweetened with maple syrup and the whole thing was topped off with some.....Bacon.
Yep.
It was weird and scared a few of the grown ups away, but it was over all a hit. I have never had to ask some one if they wanted their cake with meat or no meat....priceless.....
So now we have opened a door that was up til now closed. I told him the night after his party, how proud I was that he had a party. He said, "what do you mean?"
I then pointed out that he has not had a real birthday party since he was five. He asked, "What the heck did I do instead?!"
I reminded him of the family tradition birthday dinner then the trip we took to the science museum....small quiet things.....
His response? "Man I was drugged!"
I hope he learns to quantify that statement soon so that I do not get arrested....The truth is now I am a little worried...
No more birthday avoidance.....we are in the game now for both kids....I am Martha Stuart when it comes to birthday parties....for example....last year for my daughter's 12th birthday, we had a prom....no boys, just funny cardboard cut outs of the girls "dates" !
The guys from Twilight were there, Michael Jackson came and even a Beetle made an appearance. The girls all got to keep their prom dress, as the party favor....(Don't freak out they all were found at thrift stores and cost me about 30.00 for all the girls!) We decorated the garage like a prom and did the girls hair and makeup then had a "fancy dinner" It was great.
Well sort of. That was when my daughter was sick and she had missed most of her 6th grade year. I wanted to do something special. She was thrilled, but too exhausted to really enjoy it....Oh well. At least we tried...
Since my son did not like birthday parties, we hardly went to any....he didn't even stay for his sister's fun. He and dad would find some other activity while the girls whooped it up....well while my daughter whooped and I worked....
So now my husband can help! He can be here! He can live the full glory of the Birthday Party! I have never been happier! I feel like the whole family dynamic has changed. For the best, but it will take me a while to get use to this new world.....
